International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad
International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad
Foreword:
Established in 1998, International Institute of Information Technology is an autonomous university and nation’s first institute based on nonprofit public private partnership model. The university offers courses in IT and Computer Science and is strongly focused on research even at undergrad level. The university is organized as Research Centers and Labs, unlike others which are organized into Departments. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate and dual degree programs in IT and Computer Science areas.
Location:
The immensely reputed IIIT is located in the major IT district of Gachibowli in the north-west part of the city. In spite of being far from the city centre the location isn’t a turn off, as there is enough transportation available to all parts of the city. Also being a completely residential school, daily commute is out of the question. Although not well connected to the MMTS railway network, but the APSRTC buses do a good job here. 216, 156 and 10H drop you to the college and it doesn’t make you wait much at any time of the day. With major IT giants all around outside the campus the place will certainly dazzle you every single time you pass by.
Infrastructure:
Ample sign boards direct you to the main gate of IIIT-H and a humble gate welcomes you. If you’re an inmate, RFID cards log your entry and exit into the campus (hints of application of information technology at the very beginning). The 62 acre campus is beautiful at first sight and has a green cover all around. The academic blocks consist 4 buildings named after mountain ranges; Nilgiri, Vindhya and Himalaya. All the labs are air-conditioned and are open from 6 in the morning to 12 midnight, basically to facilitate students to conduct their research at their own pace and comfort. The academic infrastructure is undoubtedly excellent and at par or even better than many other top institutions of the country. Students tell us that some labs have been sponsored for research by giants like NVIDIA, Intel, and SAMSUNG which speaks a lot about the focus of the institute. Labs are already equipped with the latest products, yet if your work demands an upgrade in the computer, you can ask for it and the college will provide it in a week or so. The entire college database management has been now shifted to the cloud, which enables easy sharing of research resources with everyone. High speed internet is always available to the students through wired and wireless internet mediums. The library is huge and provides every book a student would need to refer. Library also stays open till midnight for reading or studying. Various research departments have their own libraries with material available for specific areas. The classrooms are equipped with modern projectors and hi-fi sound system and are equally well maintained. The college doesn’t stay behind when it comes to sports facilities and provides everything students need. The college also has infrastructure to support and encourage extracurricular activities like dance, photography etc.
Well about the hostels, they are at par with the academic infrastructure setup here at IIIT. 2 hostel blocks for girls and boys each, of which 1 is brand new. For the first and second year, the rooms are shared by two and later years, there’s a room to everyone. The mess system is pretty cool, with north and south Indian messes, which sensitively understands the needs and tastes of people from all over the country. There’s also a combined mess and in all there are 4 messes, which serve tasty and nutritious food. Again the managing of the messes utilizes a self-developed IT portal where you can set your default mess, and based on a weekly menu change preferences before the meals. All the canteens are equally poplar with students. Not very critical, yet worth a mention is that there are no power cuts on the campus any time, and other hostel facilities like hot water and security are all correctly in place.
Fees:
4 Year B.Tech (UG) Rs.2,00,000 per year (inclusive of hostel charges)
Faculty:
Absolutely top notch talent and highly experience faculties from various IITs and IISCs impart their knowledge to students here. The main focus of the institute is primarily on research which the faculties conduct and involve the students in their work too. All the faculties are highly qualified in their field, and what most students told stupidsid was that they never spoon feed the students because every semester students are assigned projects for which the faculty only ‘guides’ them. Yet some of the newer faculty hasn’t been able to impress the students. All the professors are approachable and are available all throughout the day on the campus.
Apart from learning from the professors, IT Giants from the industry visit the campus regularly for project and paper presentation, so that implies more practical exposure to students.
Attendance:
It would re really naïve if you come here and not be serious about studies and gaining knowledge. So bunking college and not attending lectures is not the most advisable thing to do in a university of such a caliber. From about 25-30 lectures per subject, one can (at the most) miss 4 lectures in a semester per subject and final grade is reduced by 1. In case you still miss more lectures, another grade will be reduced and so on. And this is enough to discipline the students, as the CGPA depends on grades. The scenario outside the academic block is much different and there’s absolute freedom about what movement in and out of the campus, but every event is logged in the RFID system.
Other disciplinary rules aren’t much stiff either. Research labs are open 24 hours and one lecturer is known for taking all his lectures in the night. But again, there is no way of escaping the RFID and CCTV systems, so everyone’s under check constantly.
Crowd:
Now that’s where you see cultural diversity of the nation, people from all over the country make it here to IIIT-H. But the good thing here is that absolutely everyone gets admission based on merit, and there are no reservations of any kind. Till now they were based on AIEEE cutoffs, but now would be on JEE-Main marks. Also at PG level, IIIT has a separate entrance test, which screens out only the best talent from all the applicants so you can expect a certain level of geek-ness in the students as all are very focused and basically interested in research. Even the interview is conducted keeping in mind the research one must pursue here. Also, the subjects, syllabus and learning methodology are followed as per Stanford University standards, and exposure to topic under a subject is wide. Many even continue their research even after they have been placed, or go on to do their M.Tech here itself.
Canteen:
On the campus there are 3 canteen; 2 college side and one hostel side. Different canteen serves different kind of food and variety; one serves junk food like Burgers, Samosa and Chai-biscuits, other serves Reals, Rotis, rice and Biryani. Cold drinks are not allowed in the campus, so if you crave for some aerated drink, you would have to head out of the campus. Food at all the canteens is affordable and tasty, but some students say that hygiene may be an issue at times. Non-veg food is also served in the canteen mess, but online registration is required. Since you would be spending 4 years at the college, this aspect you would not have to worry about.
Hangouts:
The campus itself is a major hangout for a lot of students. You can spend all your spare time in the vast campus with friends and never get bored finding new places and nooks. Yet Gachibowli isn’t any behind when it comes to places to hangout at. There are ample places to eat out like MacDonalds, Subway and the likes.
Festivals:
Felicity is annual festival of IIIT-H and it sees participation from students of the entire city, and even state. Apart from the annual festival, other events keep happening every week, like there are robotics events, there are workshops and seminars organized too. But overall, the focus is still maintained to be on research activities, and some research that goes on here is actually path breaking.
Placements:
When you’ve worked so hard for the 4 years and learned technology, every single student deserves a good job in the industry. IIIT-H doesn’t fail to impress even here. The jobs at IIIT-H are exceptional and being situated in the IT district adds up as an advantage. Most placements are product based and Undergrad-Postgrad-and MS placements are common and conducted together. Students tell us that about 100 companies registered last year, and recorded over 100% placements last year. Which means everyone got at least one job. Facebook and Google also recruited some students from IIIT. Placements can be considered at par with IITs and the minimum package was 6 lakh. But here the concept of mass recruiting isn’t seen, as most companies come with specific requirements and hire about 4-5 students. Facebook offered jobs in the US last year.

Verdict:
Being a privately managed university, the management has strongly held on to its focus of research and thus it’s a superb place if you want to pursue research even at UG level. Life in general is good and you would certainly meet intelligent chaps who are always involved in productive things and pushing technology ahead. IIIT-H also has a superb reputation in the corporate world which is pretty obvious.
