Manipal Insitute of Technology (MIT)
Foreword:
Manipal Institute of Technology, also known as MIT Manipal or Manipaltech is one of the first self-financed colleges of the country. It's a very well known engineering college, best known because of its excellent curriculum. The Mechanical Engineering degree from this college is very well recognized. This college will be “the best part of your life” is the first thing that a student told us. It is a place for everyone, from the nerds to the crazy party kids, there is something for everyone. Engineering, Hotel Management, MBBS and pretty much all the other possible courses are offered by Manipal University, so there will be a lot of variety in the junta you will come across.
Location:
It's located in Manipal which is basically a small college town in Karnataka which became famous because of this college. The biggest city which is close-by is Mangalore and takes around 1.5 - 2 hours to reach by bus. Temple town of Udupi is the nearest town, around 15-20 minutes by bus. But you will rarely want to go to the cities once you land up here because it has pretty much everything you need to spend the best years of your life be it pubs, discos, eateries. Just about everything.
Campus and Infrastructure:
The infrastructure is something that this college boasts about and rightfully so. All buildings are state-of-the-art and maintained in the right way. The new buildings in the campus, the library, cafeteria are all air conditioned. The Labs are well-equipped and the Lab-in-charges are very helpful and friendly. College campus is Wi-Fi enabled. There are a number of hostels, offering whichever staying facilities you're looking for be it AC or Non-AC, single room, twin sharing or triple sharing. The hostels are in tip-top shape, even the ancient ones. Every place is extremely clean. Manipal being a private university, the management invests a lot of money into the infrastructure, so this should not at all be a cause of concern for you.
Fees:
Approx. Rs 1.6 Lakh/year (tuition+non-tuition) and hostel fees can range from Rs 80,000 to 1.2 Lakh/year inclusive of mess. And 5,000-6,000 a month should be sufficient allowance.
Faculty:
The professors are average in off-beat branches like Biomedical and Production while in the more popular branches like CS, Electrical and Mechanical they professors are very experienced and helpful. They find out the time to help you with your studies and encourage you to take up extra projects. They can be a little hard on you sometimes, but you will learn to just take it in stride.
Crowd:
People from all parts of the country, actually even the world, come to study in Manipal. So the diversity is great. You will find all kinds of people ranging from cool people from Delhi to very sincere, bookworms of the South. And of course, there are the rich, spoilt brats from the middle east. The girl:boy ratio is approximately 40:60 (Boys are you reading??)
Campus life is great. There couldn't be one pass out from Manipal who wouldn't want to go back! There are so many beaches nearby which everyone should make a point to visit. Ragging scene really isn't there, it's banned by college. There is almost zero ragging on and off campus. The seniors are least bothered about the juniors. But sometimes, friendly ragging does take place, which is nothing to be worried about and there is no need to call the anti-ragging squad for that.
Rankings:
Manipal is among the top 5 private engineering colleges in India and in the top 30 among ALL engineering colleges in India.
Placements:
The average package here is around 4.5 lakhs to 5 lakhs. The highest ones generally reach the 16 Lakhs mark which is again subject to how well you perform throughout the course. Companies like Microsoft, Tata Motors, ABB, IBM, Samsung, LnT, Mahindra and Juniper Networks are known to visit the campus for recruitment offering profiles across all functions and roles.
Festivals and Other activities:
There are many festivals and events organized by each college, Techtatva (tech fest held in September), Revels (intra-college) and Utsav (inter-college) being the most popular ones in MIT. They have many many events, with something in it for everyone. The fests are one week long celebrations, with people from many different colleges taking part, colorful posters & small stalls all over the college, they are understandably the reason the students wait for all year long. There are also a very active football and basketball teams and MIT has won the inter college tournaments for the last 3 years.
Religious festivals like Holi and Diwali are also very popular here. The entire college seems to get together and celebrate, doesn't matter which part of the country you come from, the festive spirit takes over.
Canteen, Mess and other hangouts:
Different hostels have different messes. The common food court is pretty huge and hygienic. North Indians (or NIDs as they are called here) might find the food to be of slightly South Indian taste. But there are good mess options outside the college. There are an ample number of hangout spots like BigBoss, OpenBar, DeeTee, Opium, Snack Shack, CocksNMocks, Fishland and Twist among a truck load of others. There are beautiful beaches and extremely scenic areasaround Manipal. Bring your cameras if you're into photography. There is an exuberant night life scene as well with discos like Hangout. Keep in mind though that you will be going there to study rather than just enjoy.

Verdict:
There's just something magical about this place, students say. Tucked away, far from the hustle bustle of the city, it has created an amazing environment of its own. A student who recently graduated from the college tells us, “You will meet the craziest bunch of people here, learn so many things about yourself that you probably wouldn't have, had you chosen to study within the comforts of your city.” Keep this in mind when you make your choice between Manipal and any other college.
